The drive along the scenic Puna coast is amazing.  It offers some incredible views

and contrasts, from a lush coconut-covered coastline to miles where you see nothing

but a newly-deposited volcanic rock that swallowed entire towns in the 1960s.

A narrow road cuts through the hardened lava flow at Cape Kumukahi where

 an entire town was abandoned as it was reclaimed by the volcano in 1960
